A Chandigarh court has dismissed a defamation case filed by MP Simranjit Singh Mann’s son Emaan Singh Mann against Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal.
The case was filed in September 2022 under Sections 499, 500 and 120-B of the IPC alleging that both leaders had levelled false allegations that the Manns had usurped 125 acre panchayat land in Majri tehsil of Mohali.
Emaan Singh Mann said by doing so, the leaders had directly attacked his and his father’s reputation. He alleged the false statements were made by both leaders at Chotti Badi Naggal village. In fact, he owned only five bighas and 14 biswa land in that village, he said.
After hearing the arguments, the court dismissed the complaint saying the statement made by the two leaders was based on a report prepared by public servants. There was no evidence on record to show that they had intentionally levelled false allegations against the complainant and his family just to defame them. Hence, no ground is made out to summon the accused under Section 499, read with Section 500 of the IPC.
