Moga, February 23
The state government has stalled 78 development works in Moga, tenders of which had already been floated. In all, 100 such projects have hit a roadblock.
Several other works have fallen prey to the ongoing political tussle between the ruling Congress and the SAD-BJP controlled civic body.
When the General House and the Finance and Contracts Committee have already passed the works, how can the Commissioner stop the projects? Akshit Jain, Mayor
Rumours have it that the Congress government has “intentionally” stopped the execution of 78 new development works so that the SAD-BJP could not claim credit for these as the general elections of the are nearing.
The term of the present elected body expires next month. Sources said the government wanted to appoint a PCS officer as the administrator of the local body and then start the development works in an “arbitrary” manner. Mayor Akshit Jain alleged that the Congress government was unnecessarily creating hurdles in the development works due to its vested interests.
Claiming that the Congress had lost its ground in Moga, Jain said the party was resorting to unfair methods to get majority in the next MC elections.
“The people of Moga have realised that the Congress is creating hurdles in the development works and they will never elect vote in its favour now,” he added.
Leader of 17 Independent councillors Deepinder Singh Sandhu also voiced a similar concern. Senior Deputy Mayor Anil Bansal alleged that the Congress had no candidates to field in the next elections and it might try to postpone the same. Another senior councillor Gurminderjit Singh Bablu, who is also the member of the Finance and Contracts Committee, has urged the State Election Commission to announce the civic body election date.
