Workers of the SAD and BSP began an indefinite dharna in front of the administrative complex to protest the alleged failure of the district police in presenting challan in court against a sacrilege suspect within the stipulated period, resulting in the grant of bail.
The protesters sought a new SIT to probe the incident afresh and immediate arrest of the suspect.
Didar Singh Bhatti, SAD’s Fatehgarh Sahib incharge, and Karnail Singh Panjoli, SGPC member, said the suspect of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Tarkhan Majra and Jallah in 2020 was arrested on the spot and booked under the IPC and UAPA Act.
They claimed the police failed to present challan in court within the stipulated period and the state Home Department refused to give sanction under the UAPA, allowing the suspect to get bail.
They said the state had failed to bring the suspect to book and demanded a new SIT to investigate the case. Eleven members would sit daily at the dharna site till the suspect was convicted, they added.
