Drug racket busted in Ropar District Jail

The police on Sunday busted a drug smuggling racket being run inside the Ropar District Jail and arrested two cops and some inmates.

Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana said the gang was involved in smuggling drugs and other prohibited items in the jail.

On June 2, the jail authorities had received information that Head Constable Kuldeep Singh, a resident of PAP Lines, Jalandhar, was in possession of prohibited items while on duty inside the jail. Taking immediate action, the authorities seized 101 gm charas, 154 intoxicating capsules, 80 tablets and six packets of tobacco from him.

A case under Sections 20, 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act, Section 223-B of the BNS and Section 52-A of the Prisons Act was registered against him at the City police station, Ropar.

During interrogation, Kuldeep revealed the involvement of other accomplices, including inmates Asif, resident of Aliganj in Bareilly district of UP, Kabir of Pahlwara in Sambhal district of UP, ASI Sukhram Singh (resident of PAP Complex, Jalandhar), and inmate Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, of Kartar Nagar, Batala. They were arrested on different dates. Mumtaz Alam of Kambala in Mohali district is yet to be arrested.

In a related case, Gurpreet Singh of Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, was arrested, under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Section 52-A of the Prisons Act. A mobile phone and opium were seized from him. The SSP said if any jail staff or other individual was found involved in drug trafficking inside the jail, strict action would be taken him.
