New Delhi, November 1
Leading in road mishap deaths, India has finally woken up to the urgency of formalising trauma care.
For the first time in India’s medical education history, the Centre has said a department of emergency medicine will be made mandatory for any new medical college with effect from the 2022-23 academic year.
Until now, emergency medicine has not been among compulsory teaching departments in medical colleges.
Notifying rules, the Ministry of Health stated, “The department of emergency medicine shall be mandatory for all medical colleges with effect from the 2022-23 academic year. All new medical colleges are required to have a department of emergency medicine. Also, all medical colleges in any stage of renewal are required to have the department.”
