Abohar: Veena Chauhan, who started her career as a beautician about 35 years ago, has done her bit on the International Women’s Day. Several women inmates at Central Jail in Sriganganagar, near here, have completed 15-day training in make-up under her guidance. Additional District and Sessions Judge Sushma Pareek presented certificates to the inmates. The training camp was organised by Lions Club. Its president Ashish Arora said a five-day henna camp and two-week sewing and stitching camp would also be organised soon. Pareek and senior advocate Manju Pandey lauded club’s initiative that would help women inmates become self-reliant. Fashion designer Parul Bhatia in her lecture urged the inmates to forget their past and work towards joining the mainstream.
Of statue and unkept promise
Chandigarh: Shri Brahmin Sabha, Punjab, has hailed the decision of the government to install a bronze statue of Bhagwan Parshuram in Ludhiana. It, however, expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had not given time to the sabha for a meeting. Behari Lal Saddi, general secretary of the sabha, said the Brahmin community had several issues which it wanted to discuss with the CM. “We have been waiting for a meeting with the CM for the last three years, but in vain,” he said. Saddi reminded Capt Amarinder of his promise made to the Sabha on in April, 2014 at Amritsar during the Lok Sabha election.
Govt readies ‘report card’
Chandigarh: With the Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government completing three years in office later this month, it is time for government officials to burn the midnight oil to prepare a “report card” of the government’s performance. Instructions have been issued to all departments to tell report the status of key decisions taken in the first Cabinet meeting of the government held in March 2017. A government functionary said the state wanted to prepare itself in the wake of Opposition attack. In the coming days, there could be more announcements to implement the Cabinet decisions.
Workers favour ‘Delhi model’
Amritsar: Local sanitation workers often refer to the Delhi government’s initiatives while raising demands. Following the death of a sewer man in the city recently, kin and unionists demanded Rs 1 crore compensation from the state government, even as there is no confirmation that the Delhi Government extends such a financial aid. However, as per the data available with the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK), in the case of sewer deaths reported in New Delhi, the compensation of Rs 10 lakh had not reached the families in over 50 per cent of the cases till January 2019.
‘Jhadu’ on wedding card
Muktsar: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader from Muktsar has shown his commitment to the party by printing party’s poll symbol “jhadu” (broom) on his wedding card. Further, he has even mentioned “Mission 2022” on it. The card has become talk of the town.
