The Department of Higher Education has made an entrepreneurship mindset course mandatory for undergraduate students.

The course has already been rolled out in 18 government and private universities. Under the programme, every undergraduate student will work on a business or service idea, refining and executing it in each semester. Students’ progress will be evaluated on viability, innovation and revenue generation.

“Under this programme, students can be given a target to earn Rs 10,000 in each semester. This will boost their marketing and entrepreneurship skills,” a senior government functionary said.

In an advisory issued by Higher Education and Languages Secretary Anindita Mitra, VCs of various state universities were directed to implement the course. As part of the phased rollout, the programme would be introduced in BTech, BCom, BBA and BVoc courses from the 2025-26 academic session, with expansion to other undergraduate courses the following year.
