Former AIG (Personnel) Harmohan Singh Sandhu, son of former minister Satwant Kaur Sandhu, who left his government job to join the Shiromani Akali Dal in February 2019 resigned from the primary membership of the party today.

Sandhu, who posted a message on his Facebook page in this regard, said he would submit his formal resignation to party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Sandhu had quit his police job on November 26 in 2018, eight years before his retirement. His father Ajaib Singh Sandhu was a two-time MLA and his mother won the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly seat five times.

Sandhu was expecting a SAD ticket for the forthcoming Assembly elections. His prospects in politics, however, dimmed when the Chamkaur Sahib seat was allocated to the BSP, with which the Akalis forged an alliance after snapping ties with the BJP recently. Following this, Sandhu was “under pressure” from supporters to take a call.

In his resignation letter, Sandhu said: “From 1962, my family, including parents, elder brother and brother-in-law, has been in service of the SAD and constituency of Shri Chamkaur Sahib… After the June 12 agreement, we were not given the election symbol despite the strong appeal from the constituency congregation.”

Sandhu said he and his supporters were upset after the seat was allocated to party’s new alliance partner. He with consent of the SAD high command had even negotiated with the BSP for his candidature from Chamkaur Sahib, he claimed.

Ruling out joining any other party, Sandhu said: “Under extreme pressure of supporters, I have no option but to sit at home.”
