Kairon, a four-time MLA from the Patti constituency, served as a minister, holding the excise and taxation, food and IT portfolios, during the SAD tenure from 2007 to 2017.

Despite being closely related to the Badal family, he was expelled from the party in May for allegedly participating in anti-party activities on the basis of a complaint by SAD candidate for the recent parliamentary poll Virsa Singh Valtoha. Kairon refrained from commenting and left after submitting his clarification.
