About 200 farmers, including 50 women, were detained by the police as they raised slogans against the government.
They were released in the Khemkaran area, about 70 km from the protest spot.
Satnam Singh Manochahal, district president of the Kisan Mazdoor Sanghrsh Committee, condemned the police action, saying the protesters just wanted to meet the CM and raise their demands.
He said the police bundled them in security vehicles and took them away from the site. Meanwhile, Mann urged people not to be misled by the propaganda of the Opposition parties.
CM’s wife campaigns too
The CM's wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, too campaigned for ruling AAP candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu. She visited several villages, met women and addressed public gatherings.
In her address, she spoke on Mohalla Clinics, free electricity being provided by the government and welfare schemes. She said in the next state budget, the government would provide state women a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, a promise AAP had made in the run-up to the 2022 Assembly poll. The announcement was made by Mann on Monday.
SAD seeks case against Warring
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) filed a complaint with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) against Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring for alleged derogatory remarks against former Union Home Minister and Dalit leader Buta Singh.
The party demanded that a case be registered Warring under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
BJP only alternative: Lalpura
BJP leader and National Commission for Minorities Chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura, along with other leaders, campaigned for party candidate Harjeet Singh Sandhu. Lalpura alleged that step-motherly treatment had been meted out to Tarn Taran district by the AAP government.
He said that there was no alternative than the BJP to bring peace, law and order in the state.
Beginning of AAP decline: Bajwa
Senior Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa campaigned for party candidate Karanbir Singh Burj in Chabbal, Kairowal and Behla villages.
He was accompanied by Captain Sandeep Singh Sandhu, former Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh, former MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria, Harminder Singh Gill and Sukhwinder Singh Danny.
He accused Mann of adopting a dictatorial attitude towards people. “As a result, people are fed up with the poor performance of the AAP government,” he said, adding that the Tarn Taran bypoll would mark the beginning of AAP’s downfall.
