A group of farmer on Wednesday started a sit-in at the deputy commissioner’s office here following a scuffle with police personnel.

The protesters scaled walls of the office to enter the premises as the security personnel tried to stop them.

However, the protesters led by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee alleged that the police resorted to a lathicharge when they tried to enter the office to lodge their protest over the non-fulfilment of their demands.

The protesters also alleged that police personnel snatched their mobile phones. The police have denied the accusations.

A protester said the police closed gates of the office premises when they reached there.

Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee’s state general secretary Rana Ranbir Singh said they had submitted a letter of demands to the deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police on February 14.

The demands included Rs 5 lakh compensation each for families of Balwinder Singh and Jarnail Singh, who had died during the ongoing agitation at the state’s border points with Haryana. They had also demanded government jobs for their kin and debt waiver.
