Sangrur, August 5
Members and activists of the youth wing of the Kirti Kisan Union today took out a motorcycle march through various villages and Sangrur city. They sought the Attari and Hussainiwala borders to be opened for trade with Pakistan. They also demanded loans to farmers and farm labourers be waived off. Under the leadership of the state convener of the youth wing, Bhupinder Singh Longowal, the march started from Longowal village and culminated at Mastuana Sahib.
The other demands of the youth wing were solutions to Punjab river waters as per the Riparian principle, the implementation of a pro-nature agriculture model, the supply of canal water to every field, and potable drinking water to each household. The protesters raise slogans in support of their demands.
Bhupinder Singh Longowal said youths gathered at Longowal village to take out a march on motorcycles through Duggan, Bahadurpur, Lidran, Changal, Hareri, Sangrur, Uppli, Chathe, Ubhawal, and Badrukhan villages. However, they ended the march at Mastuana Sahib.
Longowal said they had taken out the motorcycle march to create awareness among the masses about the demands and issues of the state. He said the state had been passing through an underground water crisis and an agriculture crisis; however, the state government had not prepared any agriculture policies to tackle the problems. He added that, besides, the state government had not prepared any plan to save Punjab’s river waters, which had been flowing to other states.
He said if trade routes to Pakistan were opened, they would be connected with Central Asia and Europe too; however, the Central Government was not ready to open the Wagah and Hussainiwala borders, causing a huge financial loss to the state. He urged the Centre to open the borders as soon as possible.
