Sangrur, November 18
Having failed to see any action even seven days after the start of their indefinite protests in Lehra and Moonak, farmers on Thursday started another indefinite protest at the Lehra railway station and blocked tracks to press for the restart of paddy purchase, supply of DAP and financial aid for crop losses.
“Authorities have failed to take any effective step to fulfil our demands. Our protests will continue at SDM offices in Moonak and Lehra and at the railway until the fulfillment of our demands,” said Ram Singh Dhindsa, a BKU (Ugrahan) leader.
Seven days ago, farmers had started their protest at the SDM office in Lehra. However, when authorities failed to take any action, farmers started another indefinite protest at Moonak SDM office. They blocked the entry to SDM offices.
“DAP is easily available on the black market at almost double rate, and yet there is no action against anyone. Many shopkeepers are also selling during night,” said Harjinder Singh, BKU (Ugrahan) leader of Lehra block.
Sangrur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ramvir, he said: “I have directed the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies to ensure the adequate supply of DAP. If there is any black marketing, I request farmers to share the details with my office and I will ensure quick action.”
