Fazilka doctors meet SSP, demand setting up of police post at hospitals

A deputation of the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA), led by president Dr Rohit Goyal, met SSP Varinder Singh Brar today to apprise him about the problems being faced by them in government hospitals that lack police posts.

They said while the demand for security by doctors and the Health Department has become more insistent after the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, the request to set up a police post in the government hospital in Fazilka has been pending for four years. Even when the hospital was located in the old building near Shastri Chowk in the city, the demand was raised due to the ruckus created due to regular disputes there.

Even after the construction of the new hospital two years ago, this demand remains unfulfilled. In the 100-bed hospital, doctors, patients and nursing staff depend on only a few security guards and CCTV cameras.

Dr Goyal said at the hospital, patients are attended to 24 hours a day. There have been clashes between patients and their supporters in the emergency ward, which was causing inconvenience to the patients and their attendants. At the same time, doctors may also come face to face with ugly situations during the day, which affects the patients and worsens the atmosphere.

The PCMS doctors said police posts should be set up in government hospitals as soon as possible. SSP Varinder Singh Brar heard the deputation’s demand and said that he would take it up soon to ensure a safe work environment for doctors.
