Five killed in mishaps due to foggy weather

Five persons were killed and eight injured in three accidents reportedly caused due to thick fog in and around Abohar.

Two women, identified as Bhadoo Devi (60) and Krishna Devi (55), died on the spot as a pickup van that was ferrying labourers back to homes from kinnow orchards in Mammad and Morjand Khari villages, collided with a tractor-trailer near Sihagawali village on the Sriganganagar road on Saturday night. The van driver fled after the mishap. The vehicle has been impounded and a case registered.

The police said seven persons — Nirwair Singh, Simarjit Kaur, Hardayal Singh, Paramjit Kaur, Mohinder Kaur, Angrej Singh and Girdawari Devi — were injured in the accident. They were shifted to Sriganganagar hospital. Some of the victims belong to Gidderbaha in Muktsar district. They were staying with their relatives at Burjwala village for work in the kinnow plucking season.

Two Bihar residents, who were working at Peelibanga, were killed and one injured as a truck reportedly hit a bike near the Peelibanga station at 10.45 pm on Saturday when the visibility was poor.

As per the FIR lodged by Shanker Dass, his relatives Mohan Lal (30), Vijay Kumar (32) and Ranjeet (29) were to board the Avadh Assam Express to go to their native places in Bihar. A truck allegedly hit their bike and dragged one of the victims for about one kilometre. Mohan and Vijay died, Ranjeet was shifted to civil hospital in Hanumangarh.

A farmer, Ram Pal Nayak (45), of Mirzewala village died on the spot when his tractor collided with another vehicle due to thick fog. Nayak was returning home after selling farm produce, the family said.
