Footballer murdered in Jalandhar; two arrested

A Goraya-based football player, who was publicly attacked with sharp-edged weapons by some youths on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Rama Mandi last night.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested two suspects — Gurpreet Singh and Mangat Singh.

The deceased — Karandeep Mohammad (23), alias Karan of Postkhana Road — had a fight with some youths in a locality, following which the latter attacked the player and his friend, Rajat. Karan was admitted to a hospital in Jalandhar and Rajat in Phagwara.

In his statement to the police, Buta Mohammad, the father of Karan, said his son was attacked by the youths after an argument that turned into a scuffle. The family said they would not perform the last rites of their son until the police arrest his killers.

The police have registered a case against the three suspects — Varinder, Mangat and Gurpreet — under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC.
