The thought of I being weaker than my classmates never crosses my mind. I have been securing the first position since Class I. I am physically weak, but I am the strongest when it comes to determination. I will definitely become a judge one day.

“The thought of I being weaker than my classmates never crosses my mind. I have been securing the first position since Class I. I am physically weak, but I am the strongest when it comes to determination. I will definitely become a judge one day,” says Jashandeep, a student of Class IV studying in a government school of his native village Kalbanjara.

On Sunday, he appeared for an examination for Ramanujan Math Award.

His younger brother, Arshadeep (10), who is also a Class IV student, takes care of Jashandeep all day and is proud of his achievements. “I have never felt awkward because of my brother. He has been earning praise for the family by securing the first position in several competitions,” says Arshdeep.

His father, Kuldeep Singh, is a Class VIII passout. He understands the importance of education and is determined to educate both his sons.

“At home, my wife takes care of Jashan. And at school, his younger brother takes care of him. After returning from school, he is always engrossed in books. Perhaps, this is the reason he has been securing the first position,” Kuldeep says.

Jajj Sharma, a teacher posted in the Kalbanjara government school, says that on several occasions, Jashandeep has solved tough questions which other students find them difficult to solve.

“Jashandeep has been securing more than 90 per cent marks. One day, he will achieve his aim with hard work,” he says with confidence.
