A gangster lodged in jail for an attack on a village Sarpanch was injured in a police encounter during a weapon recovery operation near Barhowal village in SBS Nagar’s Banga area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the accused, identified as Karanjeet Singh alias Jassa, allegedly opened fire on a police party after being taken to the site where he had reportedly hidden the weapon used in the September 27 attack.

In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring him. He was taken to the Civil Hospital in Nawanshahr, where he remains under treatment in police custody.

SSP Mehtab Singh Virk said Jassa had been brought on a production warrant for further investigation. He was previously booked, along with his absconding accomplice Sonu Khatri, for the attack on Sarpanch Gurwinder Singh alias Pehlwaan of Happowal village.

Another case has been registered under Section 109 of the BNS and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Sadar Banga police station.
