A gangster was shot in the leg by the police here on Saturday after he tried to escape from their custody near Bhankharpur in Dera Bassi.
The incident took place when gangster Malkiat Singh, alias Maxi, was taken for the recovery of a weapon that he had confessed to have concealed at an isolated place at the Zirakpur-Ambala highway.
Cops said Malkiat, a native of Rajasansi, Amritsar, tried to flee from the custody and opened fire, hitting a police vehicle. In retaliation, cops fired at him and one bullet hit his left leg, Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar said.
He was later taken to Mohali civil hospital.
Maxi, a member of the Goldy Brar gang, and his accomplice, identified as Sandeep, were arrested by the Patiala police in the Arms Act case.
Subsequently, both were brought on a production warrant from a Patiala jail by the Mohali police on Friday in an extortion case, wherein the accused had targeted Mohali-based property dealer and demanded Rs 50 lakh in January.
Malkiat’s disclosure led to the recovery of a pistol near the Ghaggar Bridge in Dera Bassi.
Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek said, "He has many cases of extortion and Arms Act registered against him. When he was brought here for the recovery of arms, taking advantage, he fired at the police, which hit the police vehicle. The cops narrowly escaped and retaliated in which one bullet hit his leg."
A fresh case under Sections 109, 132, 221 and 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act has been registered against him.
