Gangster’s plan to avenge mother’s death foiled, 5 held

Gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s strategy to avenge his mother’s killing went awry as the Batala police got to know of the plan in advance and managed to arrest his five accomplices who were set to execute the conspiracy.

Those arrested were identified as Lovepreet Singh of Shahbad under the Rangar Nangal police station; Sikandar Kumar, alias Gola; Onkarpreet Singh, alias Jashan; Gagandeep Singh, alias Giani; and Mehakpreet Singh. Barring Mehakpreet Singh, a resident of Amritsar, the remaining four belong to Batala subdivision.

The police also seized two pistols from their possession. The operation was conducted jointly by the Punjab counter-intelligence wing and police officials from Batala and Amritsar (Rural).

The Batala police had been apprehending the breakout of a gang war ever since the gangster’s mother was killed in the last week of June. “The police were ready to deal with any eventuality after jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s group had openly vowed retaliation for the murder of his mother and cousin,” said SSP Suhail Qasim Mir.

Bhagwanpuria’s mother Harjit Kaur and his cousin Karanvir Singh were shot dead from point-blank range in their vehicle outside their house on the Batala-Qadian road by two motorcycle-borne assailants. The Davinder Bambiha group had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The SSP said the intelligence-based operation was still on. The police hope to arrest Bhagwanpuria’s more accomplices soon.

The main accused in the case is US-based Hussandeep Singh, considered a close aide of Bhagwanpuria. He was in-charge of the entire plan.
