Govt asks law officers to resign
The Punjab Government has asked all 232 law officers appointed to represent the state in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Supreme Court and various boards and tribunals to resign. The development was confirmed by Advocate General Gurminder Singh who said the resignations were part of a routine process coinciding with the conclusion of the officers’ one-year tenure in February.
The Advocate General said the procedural step was designed to facilitate the reappointment of law officers, ensuring continuity in legal representation. He said, “The government is committed to rationalising and streamlining the functioning of the office in the larger interest of the litigants and the people of Punjab.”
The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to enhance administrative efficiency, especially in light of recent challenges faced by the party in Delhi. In addition to addressing the legal department, the government has implemented a major reshuffle within the police department, executing numerous transfers and initiating proceedings against more than 50 police officials.
The Advocate General said the requested resignations were primarily a technical measure intended to ensure a seamless extension of the law officers’ service into the forthcoming year.
