The Government of India will issue commemorative coins of Rs 100 denomination to commemorate the Nirvana Kalyanak Mahotsav 2023-24 of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism.

2550 years

This year marks 2550 years of Nirvana Kalyanak of Lord Mahavir and in this regard, the Postal Department of Government of India has also been contacted and requested to issue a series of detailed postage stamps on his life and history

‘Satyamev jayate’ inscribed

These 44 mm circular coins will be made of 50 per cent silver, 40 per cent copper and 5 per cent nickel and zinc each. The obverse side of the coin will have the Ashoka Pillar with the slogan ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and the coin will carry a value of Rs 100. — Dr Pushpendra, Jain Spiritual Leader

A spiritual leader of the community, Dr Pushpendra, said that these 44 mm circular coins will be made of 50 per cent silver, 40 per cent copper, and 5 per cent nickel and zinc each. The obverse side of the coin will bear the Ashoka Pillar with the slogan ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and the coin will carry a value of Rs 100.

He said that on the reverse side of the coin, there will be an inscription of the water temple of Nalanda Pawapuri, the Nirvana Bhoomi of Tirthankar Mahavir. Lord Mahavir 2550th Nirvana Kalyanak will be inscribed in Hindi and English around the circumference of the coin.

Litterateur Dilip Dhing said that Lord Mahavir attained Nirvana on Kartik Amavasya in 527 BC at Pawapuri. Dhing said that in the year 2001, when the 2600th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir was celebrated, coins of Rs 5 and Rs 100 were issued. The Jain symbol was inscribed on the reverse side of those coins along with the phrase ‘Parasparopgraho Jeevanam … Tattvartha Sutra’, the first Jain text in Sanskrit language.

It is noteworthy to mention that this year marks 2550 years of Nirvana Kalyanak of Lord Mahavir and in this regard, the Postal Department of Government of India has also been contacted and requested to issue a series of detailed postage stamps on his life and history.
