A large number of devotees paid obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib on the second day of the annual three-day event, officially named Shaheedi Sabha, to commemorate the martyrdom of the two youngest sons and mother of Guru Gobind Singh.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and DGP Gaurav Yadav also paid tribute to the Sahibzadas. They were escorted by DIG Ropar Range HS Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner Sona Thind and SSP Ravjot Grewal.

Kataria highlighted the great sacrifice of the Sahibzadas and said they would continue to inspire the future generations to fight oppression and injustice.

He said the valour with which Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, at the age of 9 and 6, respectively, confronted the tyrannical Mughal regime, stood firm in their faith with unwavering courage and determination, and ultimately laid down their lives, sets a unique example.

He said the Union Government held several events to honour the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri across the country.

DGP Yadav appreciated the efforts of the district police for making elaborate security arrangements for the three-day event. He said over 4,000 police personnel had been deployed in the round-the-clock duty with the arrangement of the area divided into five sectors each under the command of an officer to ensure that general public did not face any hassle in paying obeisance. A clear VIP route, which also served as the emergency route, had also been delineated, he added.

Meanwhile, NCC and NSS cadets of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib and SGGS World University, and Khalsa Aid volunteers assisted the police in managing the rush of devotees and parking of vehicles.

Safai sewadars of Sant Baba Kashmira Singh Bhuri Wale engaged in cleaning the area around the gurdwara. Amar Shaheed Baba Moti Ram Mehra Society held the kirtan darbar.

The Shaheedi Sabha will conclude on Friday. Bhai Harpal Singh, head granthi of Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, said there would be religious discourses for about half an hour at 7.45 am. “After recitation of ardas, a nagar kirtan will be organised from Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup Sahib,” he added.
