Harminder Singh quit as Bathinda deputy mayor
Congress leader Harminder Singh has resigned from the post of the Bathinda Deputy Mayor amid mounting pressure on him to quit his job in the wake of a non-confidence motion moved against him by ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) backers.
Despite having 41 councillors in the 50-member Bathinda Municipal Corporation, the Congress had lost the mayor’s post to AAP amid rampant cross-voting in the mayoral elections earlier this month.
This came as the posts of the deputy mayor and senior deputy mayor were being held by the Congress.
AAP candidate Padamjeet Singh Mehta had bagged the mayor’s post.
Harminder Singh submitted his resignation to Deputy Commissioner-cum-Municipal Commissioner Shaukat Ahmed Parray on Thursday evening.
He said his conscience “did not allow him to continue on the post" as his party have lost support of its councillors.
Earlier, a MC House meeting called on February 17 to vote on the no-confidence motion against him was cancelled.
