HCBA elections: 7 candidates vie for president's post with promises of reform
The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association (HCBA) is set for a fiercely contested election on February 28, with seven candidates competing for the coveted president’s position.
The key promises of the contenders revolve around enhanced financial aid, improved infrastructure, and empowering women candidates. About 5,030 advocates are expected to cast their votes for various office-bearer positions, including the president.
The seven candidates in the fray for the HCBA president’s post are: Vikas Malik, Sartej Singh Narula, Anil Pal Singh Shergill, Ravinder Singh Randhawa, Chouhan Satvinder Singh Sisodia, Nirbhay Garg, and Dr. Kanu Sharma.
Each candidate has outlined a unique vision, promising significant reforms and improvements for the legal fraternity.
Key promises from candidates:
Sartej Singh Narula emphasizes inclusivity, better infrastructure, and improved coordination between Bar members and the judiciary, aiming to raise the HCBA's standing and welfare.
Ravinder Singh Randhawa focuses on welfare reforms, including financial aid for underprivileged lawyers, and vows to secure at least Rs 15-20 lakh in Bar welfare funds.
Anil Pal Singh Shergill advocates for transparency and inclusivity, promising 50% reservation for women in senior advocate roles, along with a structured mentoring program for young lawyers.
Dr. Kanu Sharma stresses zero tolerance for corruption, proposing improved safety measures for women lawyers, subsidized meals, and better working conditions for all Bar members.
Chouhan Satvinder Singh Sisodia aims to streamline HCBA operations, reduce unnecessary expenditures, and create a financial aid scheme of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the families of deceased lawyers.
Vikas Malik, a former president, focuses on financial relief, pledging to abolish subscription fees for non-practicing lawyers and create a dedicated Bar room for women advocates.
Nirbhay Garg advocates for comprehensive welfare schemes, including subsidized food, enhanced medical insurance, and parking facilities for lawyers.
Intense competition for other posts:
In addition to the presidential race, competition is fierce for other key positions, including vice president, secretary, and joint secretary. With candidates campaigning actively for support, the elections are expected to shape the future of the HCBA and influence policies and welfare initiatives for the legal community.
Polling will take place on February 28, with results expected shortly thereafter, determining the future leadership of the HCBA.
