Barnala: Head Constable beaten to death by 4 ex-kabaddi players

A Head Constable posted at the Barnala city-1 police station was beaten to death on Sunday night allegedly by four drunk former kabaddi players.

The victim had received information about a dispute between the accused and the owner of a chicken shop over the payment of bill and had gone there to control the situation. However, the accused allegedly attacked him and beat him to death.

• Mann said of the Rs 2 crore assistance, Rs 1 crore will be given as ex gratia by the government while Rs 1 crore insurance cover will be provided to the family by HDFC Bank

The former kabaddi players, who were allegedly drunk, had on Sunday night gone to a chicken shop in the 25 Acres area of Barnala to have a meal. After finishing their meal, an argument broke out between them and the shop owner over the amount of the bill. When things went out of control, the owner called the police.

Head Constable Darshan Singh and two other cops reached the spot but when Darshan tried to pacify both sides, the accused attacked him and he fell on the ground. The two other police officials took the victim to the Barnala Civil Hospital.

“But Darshan Singh was declared brought dead. After getting information about the incident, more police officials reached the spot, but by then all the four accused, including Parmjit Singh, Jagraj Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Wajir Singh, had fled,” Barnala SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik said.

The police have registered a case under Sections 302, 148 and 149 of the IPC. An autopsy of the victim’s body was conducted on Monday.

“My cousin was honest and punctual for his duty. He was the sole breadwinner of his family and the government should help his family,” said Darbara Singh, the cousin of the deceased.

Barnala DSP Satvir Singh said raids were being conducted to arrest the accused.

“The accused were kabaddi players and have left sports 8-10 years ago,” the DSP said.

The CM said Darshan had attained martyrdom while performing his duty. He added that of the Rs 2 crore assistance, Rs 1 crore will be given as ex-gratia by the government while Rs 1 crore insurance cover will be made by the HDFC bank.
