At the onset of monsoon, heavy rain in the region since Thursday evening has led to the accumulation of rainwater in the fields in various low-lying areas in eight villages of the Mansa district.

Many crops have submerged in rainwater at Kotli Kalan, Kotli Khurd, Bhai Desa, Ghuman Kalan, Ghuman Khurd, Sadda Singhwala and Kharak Singh Wala villages.

Punjab Kisan Union leader Gora Singh Bhainibagha said: “We have received reports of cotton, paddy and other fields getting submerged in various villages, particularly the ones in low-lying areas due to heavy rain and this has also led to worry among the farmers”.

However, district chief officer of the Agriculture Department Dr Manjit Singh said no information has been given to him by any farmer in this regard so far but he would inspect these villages tomorrow.

Meanwhile, many villages in the district plunged into darkness due to overnight rains. Although the power corporation did not suffer any damage, the power supply was cut off due to rainwater, which has caused great distress to the people.

In view of heavy rain, Mansa Deputy Commissioner Jaspreet Singh along with SSP Gaurav Toora today visited Chandpura dam to assess the water status of the Ghaggar to check possible flood threat in Sardulgarh area of the district. He sought information from the officials of the Drainage Department about the water capacity of the Ghaggar at Chandpura dam and issued orders to keep an eye on the water level during the monsoon period.
