The Punjab Vidhan Sabha today paid obeisance to “Shaheed” Shubhkaran Singh, the farmer who had died at the Khanuari border on February 21. Farmer unions had been demanding the status of a martyr for the deceased farmer, who died when the Haryana Police “fired” at the protesting farmers trying to break barricades to march to Delhi. The government had already announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for the younger sister of the deceased farmer.

During the obituary references held today, the House also paid its respects to former Deputy Speaker Baldev Raj Chawla, former MLAs Ranjit Singh Talwandi, Parkash Singh Garhdiwala and Sohan Singh Bodal, besides Agniveers Ajay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh.
