In a shocking incident in Punjab’s Moga district, Charanamrit Singh allegedly shot and killed his wife, 45-year-old Mandeep Kaur, with a licensed revolver on Tuesday. The accused was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting. According to family members and local sources, the couple had a history of domestic violence frequently fuelled by the husband’s alcoholism.

On Monday night, a violent altercation broke out between them, prompting Mandeep Kaur to call the police. She explicitly informed them that her husband was threatening to shoot her. Although the police responded and reached the house, they chose to counsel both parties instead of taking decisive action, leaving without confiscating the licensed revolver that Mandeep Kaur had identified as a danger.

Fearing for her safety, Mandeep Kaur spent the night at a neighbour’s house. However, when she returned home the next morning, Charanamrit Singh shot her at point-blank range while still under the influence of alcohol. Neighbours immediately informed the police, who arrived, arrested the accused, and recovered the revolver.

Police sources confirmed the murder weapon was the licensed revolver Mandeep Kaur had reported as a concern just hours before the fatal incident. DSP Ravinder Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that further action would depend on the victim’s family statements.

Mandeep Kaur leaves behind three children, two daughters and a son. One daughter is married and lives in Amritsar; the other two reside abroad. Jasbir Kaur, the deceased’s sister-in-law, blamed the police for Mandeep Kaur’s death, saying, “If the police had acted responsibly and confiscated the revolver the night before, this tragedy could have been avoided.”
