Four students of IIT, Ropar, have launched a firm that has specialisation in designing as well as manufacturing complete Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) hardware.

The company has been launched by Amit Bhati, Akshit Dangi and Jeevant Kumar Shah, all students of B.Tech second year, along with Lalit Kumar Baghel, chief technical officer, who is a junior research fellow at the institute.

Bhati said Suman Kumar, an assistant professor in Electrical Department, and Kamaljit Singh, a junior technical superintendent, played a major role in developing the hardware.

Bhati said RFID products were useful in toll plaza management, warehouse management, smart production lines, attendance system, weapon storage management system, and supermarkets.

“Using this, the billing of 750 items was possible within a few seconds at any shop or company and theft can be controlled completely at shops, factories and institutions,” he said.

Anything tagged would be accounted for and as soon as it was taken outside the premises, a notification would be issued, he said.

The company christened as ScratchNest was able to get contract even from the Army and IIT Roorkee, while negotiations are also in progress with IIT Ropar.

The students said in the world of automation, internet of things based solutions were required in almost every field. So, initially they thought of developing an indoor based location system. Soon it was noticed that there was huge demand of RIFD system and country was dependent on imports for its hardware, they said.

Following this, they developed RFID readers, antenna, passive and active tags.
