IMA demands rollback of bonds, surety policy for MBBS admissions

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded immediate rollback of the Punjab Government’s new policy for admission to MBBS courses in the state’s medical and dental colleges which makes it mandatory for students to submit a Rs 20 lakh service bond and surety in the form of property.

During the ongoing admission process for the 2025-26 session, parents have been mandated to pledge two properties or land worth at least Rs 20 lakh each.

Terming the policy regressive and punitive, the Punjab chapter of the IMA said the policy had created immense financial and mental distress for parents, especially those from economically disadvantaged background.

Stating that the conditions of bonds and surety would dissuade students from taking admission in the state’s colleges and result in brain drain, the association demanded an immediate and unconditional rollback of the policy.
