The Kapurthala police arrested the key accused hours after a 20-year-old woman, Preeti, and her three-year-old son allegedly died by suicide in the Kala Sanghian area.
The woman, allegedly driven to take the extreme step due to repeated domestic harassment, set herself and her son ablaze on the rooftop of her in-laws’ house, igniting public outrage.
Soon after the incident, Preeti’s father, Amrik Singh, filed a formal complaint detailing her emotional distress and alleged harassment by her in-laws. The Sadar police station registered an FIR against her in-laws under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 498A (cruelty by in-laws).
Later, cops under the leadership of SHO Prabhjot Kaur, arrested Preeti’s father-in-law Vijay Kumar and mother-in-law Kulwinder Kaur the same evening. Raids are on to apprehend the remaining accused — aunt-in-law Babbli and grandaunt-in-law Anita, both of whom are at large.
Preeti’s mobile phone — which played a critical role in alerting her family to the incident — has been seized and is being analysed for call records and messages that could strengthen the prosecution’s case.
