Moga, April 26
Untimely rain here on Sunday drenched thousands of bags of wheat in the local grain market and those in the adjoining areas, adding to the miseries of farmers.
The inclement weather has stopped wheat harvesting as well as procurement.
Farmers said the shortage of tarpaulin at the local market was the main reason for the bags getting drenched.
Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, general secretary of the BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan), said officials of procurement agencies and commission agents were harassing farmers on the pretext of moisture content in the foodgrain. “The state government must ensure that farmers are not harassed. It must allow relaxation in procurement norms,” he said.
