Petrol and diesel have become expensive in Punjab. Days after the Punjab Vidhan Sabha passed a legislation to levy infrastructure cess, a special infrastructure development fee of Rs 0.25 per litre has been imposed on the sale of petrol and diesel in the state. This would enable the state to collect Rs 216 crore revenue, annually.

“If the VAT and other surcharges are added, the net increase in oil prices for consumers would be between Rs 0.30 and Rs 0.35,” said an official with an oil company.

The provisions of the Punjab Infrastructure (Development and Regulation Act), 2002, after getting the Governor’s nod, have been notified. The collected revenue will be deposited in the development fund of the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB).
