Muktsar, July 16
After a nearly one-and-a-half-year hiatus, former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar, who had served on the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and had later joined the SAD but was expelled in December 2022 for alleged anti-party activities, has returned to public life by forming the Punjab United Regional Forum.
Brar said that this non-political forum would focus on issues pertaining to farmers, farm labourers, water pollution, canal water, crop MSP, crop insurance, pension, drug menace, among others.
Two former MLAs, including his younger brother Ripjit Singh Brar and Vijay Sathi, as well as some intellectuals, businessmen and agriculture experts, have joined him.
When asked if he was preparing to run in the Gidderbaha byelection, Jagmeet Brar responded, “This is not a shortcut for political gain. I just want to do something for society, so I’m bringing together people from all walks of life to work on issues affecting this part of the state.”
Brar added that he would hold a ‘Jal Sammelan’ on August 30 in the district.
“Agriculture and water experts will be invited to this conference to discuss the proposed Malwa Canal, which will benefit the majority of the region’s populace. We will discuss the concerns of farmers who use lift pumps to extract water from the Sirhind Feeder Canal from Harike to Lambi and attempt to clear their doubts. We will also discuss water pollution, crop MSPs and other related topics. Besides, the issue of drug abuse will be thoroughly discussed. As of now, I have only held one meeting for its preparation in Muktsar, which took the form of a conference. Some people there had suggested that I go on a foot march,” said Brar.
In 2022, Jagmeet had contested the Assembly election from Maur as a SAD candidate and came in third with 23,355 votes.
