Jagmohan Raju quits as state BJP general secy

Punjab BJP general secretary Jagmohan Singh Raju on Friday resigned from his post, citing differences with the party’s Amritsar (Urban) president Harvinder Singh Sandhu. His resignation comes at a time when the party is gearing up for internal organisational elections.

“Even though, I had no significant voice in decision-making. I have offered to step down from the position of state general secretary to uphold the ethics of our great party and maintain the morale of the cadre,” he said.

Raju, a former bureaucrat and BJP’s 2022 Assembly election candidate from Amritsar (East), submitted a detailed four-page resignation letter. He accused Sandhu of violating party norms and overstepping his authority.

Raju alleged that Sandhu “manipulated” minutes of a BJP state election committee meeting to “favour a particular aspirant” for the December 2024 Municipal Corporation elections and his complaint in this regard was not even examined.

Raju alleged that Sandhu gave ticket to his preferred candidate, ignoring the decision of the panel, which had decided to field Sangeeta Devi.

He said under Sandhu’s leadership, the BJP saw it worst performance, winning only 8 of the 85 seats it contested.

Appointed as the general secretary in September 2023, Raju is the first person holding the position who has resigned in the middle of his term.
