The Health Department of Jalandhar organised a district-level event at Kusht Ashram to mark World Leprosy Day, honouring the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi. During the event, the Health Department and IMA distributed medicines and food items to the residents of the Leprosy Ashram. Dr Gurmeet Lal highlighted the importance of early detection and treatment of leprosy, stressing that the disease, caused by the Mycobacterium leprae bacterium, is 100% treatable if diagnosed and treated early. He urged people to seek medical attention if they notice symptoms such as numb, light-coloured patches on the skin. Dr Daljit Singh announced the launch of the “Touch Leprosy Awareness Campaign” from January 30 to February 12, 2024, during which doctors, paramedics, and ASHA workers will hold public meetings at health institutions to raise awareness about leprosy. He also mentioned that under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, treatment for leprosy is available free of charge at government health centres for six months to a year.
