A key road in Guru Nanakpura and adjoining Chuggitti road are in a state of neglect for nearly two years, causing severe hardships to local traders and commuters.
Locals say despite repeated appeals and promises made during municipal elections, the authorities concerned have failed to take action, leaving the roads riddled with potholes and dangerously uneven surfaces.
Commuters navigating these stretches face daily struggles, with two-wheeler riders skidding and accidents becoming a common occurrence. The dug-up Chuggitti road is also a key link to the Amritsar highway and has become nearly impassable, forcing vehicles to either slow down or take alternative routes.
“We had complained to the Municipal Corporation (MC) about the issue, but it appears indifferent, as no significant repair work has been undertaken despite repeated complaints,” they added.
For business owners, the deteriorating condition of the roads has led to financial setbacks. “Customers avoid coming to our shops because of the poor road condition. The dust, potholes and constant congestion have made it impossible for businesses to function smoothly,” said Dinesh, a shopkeeper in Guru Nanakpura.
Many traders said they had seen a sharp drop in sales. It is important for the MC to repair the road as customers hardly find a parking spot due to traffic congestion, especially when railway crossing is closed, they added.
They said the issue was a major talking point during the MC elections, with political leaders assuring them that repairs would be done on priority. However, months have passed and no progress has been made. “The political leaders come for votes and make big promises, but now no one is paying attention to the condition of the roads. It’s been nearly two years and the condition remains pitiable,” said Kamlesh, a local resident.
The locals demanded immediate repairs before the situation deteriorates further. Many warn that if their voices continue to be ignored, they will be left with no choice but to stage protest against the authorities.
Meanwhile, the MC officials said the concerned engineer will be asked to visit the site and do the needful.
