Four armed robbers targeted a jewellery shop in Panchhat village of Phagwara sub-division on Thursday, decamping with 40-gm gold, seven-kg silver and Rs3.5 lakh.

They shot at shop owner, Deepak Kalia, a resident of Phagwara, and his employee Sukhpal of Panchhat village during a scuffle.

After getting information, Kapurthala SSP Satinder Singh and SP (Investigation) Manpreet Dhillon reached the spot. A dog squad and fingerprints experts were called.

“The police have identified the robbers and two of them have been arrested,” the SSP said, adding the robbers came in a Camry car bearing a fake registration number. It was later found that the registration number was that of a motorcycle.

“The car was stolen by five men in Hoshiarpur two months ago. The Thursday’s incident has no link with a similar case a day before,” the SSP said.

Kalia and his employee were taken to Gandhi Hospital, Phagwara, but were later referred to DMC, Ludhiana. Dr Satnam Singh Parmar said Kalia sustained a bullet injury in his back, while Sukhpal was injured in his chest. The police have registered a case under Sections 392 and 307 of the IPC, and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

Meanwhile, a delegation of jewellers met Phagwara SP Manwinder Singh and expressed concern over the rising incidents of loot.
