Chandigarh, March 15

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that the meeting for electing Lehragaga Municipal Council president would not be convened, at least for the time being.

Issuing a notice of motion to Punjab and other respondents for March 17, the Division Bench of Justice Jaswant Singh and Justice Sant Parkash asserted: “Till the next date of hearing, convening of the meeting for election to the office of president, Municipal Council, Lehragaga, Sangrur district, shall be kept in abeyance”.

The direction came on a petition filed by Surinder Singh and other petitioners through counsel DS Sobti and Somnath Tayal. The petitioners claimed that they were independent candidates and had defeated rival Congress candidates from their respective wards. Appearing before the Bench, the counsel referred to an inquiry report submitted by the general election observer, before praying for setting aside the election of the councilors of wards number eight and two of the MC.
