Khadoor Sahib MP’s extended detention under NSA ‘murder of democracy’: Kin
The family members of pro-Khalistan leader and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh have denounced the extension of his detention under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), terming it as “murder of democracy”.
“A democratically elected Member of Parliament has been again detained on frivolous grounds. Law is not the same for every citizen in the country. The government has thrown all norms to the wind,” said Amritpal’s father Tarsem Singh.
He said the family was expecting his release as all his associates were released from the Assam jail and brought back to Amritsar.
Amritpal and nine others were shifted to the Dibrugarh jail in Assam after the NSA was invoked against them for allegedly attacking the Ajnala police station in February 2023.
Imaan Singh Khara, counsel for “Waris Punjab De” chief Amritpal Singh, said they would approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and the apex court if needed, against his “illegal” detention under the NSA.
“We will oppose the order in the court. We have challenged the invoking of detention under the NSA earlier also,” he said.
Citing security concerns, the state government has extended Amritpal’s detention under the NSA by one year. Lodged in the Dibrugarh Central jail, his detention was earlier set to expire on April 23.
