‘Kheer’, ‘halwa’ in mid-day meals till January 31
Students of Punjab government schools will now be served “kheer” and “ghee ka halwa” in their mid-day meal from January 8 to 31, when the schools open after winter break.
According to a department notice, “kheer” will be served every Tuesday while “ghee ka halwa” will be given to them every Thursday.
Seasonal fruits kinnow or orange will also be served to them on Saturday.
The department has also revised the cost of mid-day meal per child from Rs 5.45 in primary schools to Rs 6.19, and from Rs 8.17 to Rs 9.29 per child for upper primary classes.
Meanwhile, a mid-day meal incharge at an Amritsar school expressed doubts about the implementation of the plan.
“We had previously been serving kheer to students. It puts strain the meal budget. Under the given cost of cooking meal per child, serving the delicacies is likely to further strain the budget as a kilogram of ghee costs between Rs 700 to 900,” said Rajinder Kaur.
“Seasonal fruits were introduced last year in the mid-day meal scheme. But the plan did not continue for long due to procurement and cost challenges,” said Jeet Kaur, another mid-day meal incharge.
