Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) campus erupted in protests led by girl students, who have alleged harassment by university authorities and demanded the removal of the Vice Chancellor. Earlier in the day, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Jai Shankar Singh, allegedly entered the university’s girls’ hostel without permission. Students have vowed to boycott classes until action is taken.
According to students, the Vice Chancellor visited the hostel mess for an inspection and then proceeded to inspect the hostel rooms without permission from girl students. “He also made inappropriate remarks about the attire of some girls present, which many of us objected to,” said a student who wished to remain anonymous.
Following this incident, students sat on a dharna, raised slogans against the Vice Chancellor, and demanded his resignation. “No one has the right to breach our privacy or comment on our clothing choices. He should resign, or we will boycott classes,” said protesting students. “We have been facing numerous issues over the past few months, and the university has been unresponsive, resorting only to issuing threats,” added another agitated student.
Attempts to get a statement from Ishita Sharma, Assistant Professor in Law and Public Relations Officer of RGNUL, were unsuccessful. The Vice Chancellor was unavailable for comments as he was addressing the students at the time of reporting.
