Residents of Bhutal Kalan in the Lehragaga block of Sangrur have alleged that their village has turned into a hub of drug peddlers, who operate without the fear of law.

The residents and panchayat members of the village, along with those of Dera Bhutal Kalan, flagged the issue during Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal’s visit in connection with a “Sikhya Kranti” programme on Saturday.

They alleged that those involved in the sale of narcotics at the village often bragged about their influence in the government as well as police.

The minister assured them that he would revisit the village in the next five days and address the issue in their presence.

Talking to The Tribune, Goyal said he would take officials of the police and administration along to resolve their problems. He asserted that the state government was committed to eliminating the drug menace.

On the occasion, a number of elderly women, including those whose children are addicted to drugs, presented their views before the minister.

Lakha Singh, a leader of the BKU (Ugrahan) from Bhutal Kalan, said his village had become a hub of drugs, from where narcotics were being supplied to nearly 10 other villages.

He said when someone tried to stop them from selling drugs, they threatened the person concerned with dire consequences.

He also said that the peddlers often claimed that nobody could touch them.
