The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ranked the Jamalpur police station here as the best police station in the state.

Located in a well-equipped building, the Jamalpur police station caters to a migrant-dominated area. It has been adjudged among the top 35 police stations across the country, according to the MHA’s annual report.

Jamalpur was among two police stations in the state, the names of which were forwarded by the Punjab Government to the MHA for consideration in the annual rankings for the last year.

Ludhiana Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal told The Tribune that a formal intimation of the announced rankings is still awaited.

Chahal said the MHA ranks police stations across the country every year to encourage better performance and healthy competition.

The MHA uses a combination of record-based evaluation and surveys to assess the police stations.

“We are striving hard for a makeover of our all police stations,” said the Ludhiana police chief.

Ranking process

The MHA uses a scoring matrix to evaluate police stations based on their performance in specific areas, which included survey-based assessment, wherein it surveys citizens to assess their satisfaction with the police station and their willingness to report crime.

Khanauri PS was second contender

Sangrur: The Khanauri police station in Sangrur missed out on the top slot in the state after being recommended to the Centre by the Punjab Government for consideration besides the Ludhiana police station.

The Khanauri and Ludhiana’s Jamalpur police stations were selected by the state government from among over 400 police stations in Punjab.

Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal said it is a matter of pride for them that the Khanauri police station’s name was recommended by the state government.

Khanauri, located next to the state’s border with Haryana, is in the news for the past one year as a large number of farmers are camping there in protest against the Centre over their demands

Farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been observing an indefinite fast at the Khanauri protest site since November 26. —-OC
