Fazilka, January 13

Residents of the Mahavir Colony have threatened to boycott the upcoming municipal council elections due to lack of development in the colony. The government is yet to announce a date for the polls.

The residents displayed a banner on the main entrance of the colony which read it’s an “illegal” colony and none of the leaders should come to seek votes, as there are no roads and the area is deprived of other facilities.

The colony houses nearly 500 residents. Some of the residents rued that the colony was carved out by private colonisers about 11 years ago and since then successive governments had ignored the interests of the locals.

The residents, including Surinder Kumar, Diwana Watts, Raj Kumar and Prem Kumar, said no streetlights had been installed and sewer lines had not been laid. Moreover, the colony had not been regularised so far.

Municipal Councillor Arun Wadhwa said Rs60 lakh had been sanctioned for development by the council authorities and tenders would be floated soon to provide basic amenities.
