Mohali: A Mohali court extended the judicial custody of SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia by 14 days in a caseunder the Prevention of Corruption Act. Majithia, currently lodged in the New Nabha jail, appeared in the court through videoconferencing. The case will now come up for hearing on October 4. Majithia was arrested from his house in Amritsar on June 25 and after remaining in police custody for 11 days, he was sent to judicial custody. — TNS

Hospital gets regular SMO after 2 yrs

Muktsar: The Muktsar Civil Hospital has finally got a regular Senior Medical Officer (SMO). Dr Rajiv Sachdeva has joined as the SMO, bringing stability to the hospital administration, say local Health Department employees. He was earlier posted at the Badal Civil Hospital. The Muktsar Civil Hospital had been functioning without a regular SMO for almost two years, with different doctors being given officiating charge from time to time. — TNS

20-year jail for abusing stepdaughter

Muktsar: Additional District and Sessions Judge Amita Singh has sentenced a man to 20-year jail, besides imposing a fine of Rs 2.2 lakh, for repeatedly sexually assaulting his 15-year-old stepdaughter. The girl, a Class VIII student, reported the abuse to the police in 2020. Her father left her mother when she was about three-year-old. She alleged that her stepfather sexually abused her for 6 months. — TNS

2 get life term in 17-yr-old murder case

Chandigarh: A local court here has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in a 17-year-old murder case. The court acquitted two other persons. The murder had taken place in Sangrur. The convicts were identified as Sanjay Chauhan and Rakesh Kumar. The police had registered the FIR on the complaint of Sandeep, a relative of victim Harjit Singh, who had objected to an illegal construction on government land by the accused. — TNS
