Make rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah mass movement: Kataria to residents
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Sunday (January 26) emphasised the need to balance development with environmental preservation to ensure eco-friendly environment for the future generations.
In his address at the 76th Republic Day function in Ludhiana, the Governor said efforts were underway, both nationally and in Punjab, to combat air and water pollution.
He urged every individual to play a crucial role in saving the planet and stressed on making the rejuvenation of the Buddha Nullah, a highly polluted Sutlej tributary, a mass movement.
Giving a clarion call to launch a no-holds- barred war on the drug menace, the Governor pointed out that the state government was making sincere efforts towards achieving “Nasha Mukt Punjab” and had established support services unit at the headquarters of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force.
He said more than 1,500 village defence committees had been formed in six districts bordering Pakistan to enhance border security and reduce the smuggling of drugs and arms.
He underscored the importance of collective responsibility in promoting integrity and transparency in governance, urging citizens to actively support government’s efforts to create a corruption-free administration. He also encouraged citizens to engage in nation-building activities.
Remembering the martyrs and freedom fighters, the Governor acknowledged the immense contributions of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar in preparing and executing the Constitution. He mentioned that figures like Dr Ambedkar, Subhash Chandra Bose, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Rajendra Prasad and countless Indians played pivotal role in the country’s liberation from the Britishers.
“The sacrifices of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Madan Lal Dhingra and numerous youth from Punjab is a source of patriotism and nationalism for younger generations,” he added.
He also recalled the role of Punjab’s farmers in the Green Revolution that made the country self-reliant in food security.
Students from various schools presented choreographies based on patriotic and cultural songs. Army Jawans exhibited Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art during the event.
The Governor also honoured 105 individuals for their outstanding services in their respective fields. He also distributed sewing machines and tricycles to the needy and recognised freedom fighters and their family members during the event.
