Malerkotla scions making political waves in Canada, America

The youngest and smallest district of the state, Malerkotla, distinguishes in the region for having at least three villages which have registered eminence through their scions holding very high posts of responsibility in governments of different states of Canada and America at different times.

While a daughter of Jandali Kalan village family has been appointed chief government whip in House of Commons in Brampton, a scion of Jindal family of Khanpur village remained Governor of Louisiana state in America and a son of agricultural family of Banbhaura village served as a minister in Edmonton and currently serving as mayor.

Governor, whip and mayor

• Bobby Piyush Jindal emerged winner as Governor of Louisiana state in United States of America in 2008 and served till 2016. Son of an engineer Amar Jindal of Khanpur village, he had earlier rocked the region when on June 24, 2015, he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in the 2016 presidential election
• The daughter of former President of Ontario Sikh Gurdwara Council, Harbans Singh Jandali and Surinder Kaur, natives of Jandali Kalan village, Ruby Sahota, has recently been appointed chief government whip in the House of Commons in Brampton
• Amarjeet Singh Sohi is presently holding office of mayor in Edmonton. He has been Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of Natural Resources in the House of Commons in Canada and distinguished as the first south-asian mayor of Edmonton

The daughter of former President of Ontario Sikh Gurdwara Council, Harbans Singh Jandali and Surinder Kaur, natives of Jandali Kalan village, Ruby Sahota, has recently been appointed chief government whip in the House of Commons in Brampton recently.

A two time MP, Ruby Sahota is already serving as a member of board of internal economy and member of the sub-committee on review of Parliament’s involvement with associations and recognised inter-parliamentary groups in Brampton Government. Office-bearers and activists of several constitutional and social organisations felicitated Ruby in absentia and mementoes and citations were received by her parents on her behalf.

Amarjeet Singh Sohi, presently holding office of mayor in Edmonton, has brought laurels to his native village Banbhaura through his journey from a driver to Member Parliament. He has been Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of Natural Resources in the House of Commons in Canada and distinguished as the first south-asian mayor of Edmonton.

Khanpur village, situated on Malerkotla-Khanna road is another rural locality that had remained in news across the world when Bobby Piyush Jindal emerged winner as Governor of Louisiana state in United States of America in 2008 and served till 2016. Bobby Piyush Jindal, son of an engineer Amar Jindal of Khanpur village, had earlier rocked the region when on June 24, 2015, he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in the 2016 presidential election. However, he suspended his campaign in November 2015.
