Batala, November 18

A Batala girl was shot at by her cousin, who later committed suicide by pressing the trigger on himself late on Sunday night.

SSP Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said a case under Section 307 of the IPC had been registered at the city police station.

Rupinder Kaur (30) ran a beauty parlour and lived in a rented accommodation in the crowded Murgi Mohalla. She was rushed to the Batala Civil Hospital after the incident, where doctors referred her to an Amritsar hospital.

She is said to be out of danger now. Police sources claimed that before the incident, Major Singh (32) barged into landlady Rajwant Kaur’s accommodation. She said, “He was holding a .12-bore rifle. When I asked him where he was going, he threatened to shoot me. Terrified, I gave way to him, following which he entered the first floor room of Rupinder. Immediately, I heard gun shots. I then called my neighbours who went upstairs and found Rupinder writhing in pain while the body of Major Singh was lying in a pool of blood.”

She added that her family called up the control room, following which the police arrived within a few minutes.
